Description

1. Replace 4 sunshade and repair frame on youth center playground and replace all sunshades on 3 child development center playgrounds.

2. AFI-34-144 Section 3.1.4 Playgrounds meet safety and design requirements outline in Public Playground Handbook for Safety, United States Consumer Product Safety. The Force Support Squadron Commander/Director coordinates any deviations from the recommendations in the Public Playground Handbook for Safety with AFSVC/SVPY. Public Playground Handbook for Safety 2.1.1 Page 5 According to the American Academy of Dermatology, research indicates that one in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer during their lifetime, and five or more sunburns double the risk of developing skin cancer. Utilizing existing shade, designing play structures as a means for providing shading (elevated platforms with shaded space below), or creating more shade (manmade structures) are potential ways to design a playground to help protect children’s skin from the sun. When trees are used for shade, additional maintenance issues arise, such as the need for cleaning debris trimming limbs. Shades must have UV Block of 90 or higher and have a wind resistance of at least 145 mph.
