Description

Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Newport Division, the design activity, established a qualification requirement pursuant to FAR 9.202 for the Hydrophone Stave Assemblies (see the list below). HYDROPHONE ASSEMBLY 218069813 HYDROPHONE ASSEMBLY 218069814 HYDROPHONE ASSEMBLY 218069815 HYDROPHONE ASSEMBLY 218069816 HYDROPHONE ASSEMBLY 218069817 HYDROPHONE ASSEMBLY 218069818 HYDROPHONE ASSEMBLY 218069819 HYDROPHONE ASSEMBLY 218069820 HYDROPHONE ASSEMBLY 218069821 HYDROPHONE ASSEMBLY 218069822 HYDROPHONE ASSEMBLY 218069823 HYDROPHONE ASSEMBLY 218069824 HYDROPHONE ASSEMBLY 218069825 HYDROPHONE ASSEMBLY 218069826 HYDROPHONE ASSEMBLY 218069830 HYDROPHONE ASSEMBLY 218069827 HYDROPHONE ASSEMBLY 218069828 HYDROPHONE ASSEMBLY 218069829 The molded Hydrophone Stave Assemblies material are part of a critical defense system that relies on their performance for the protection and safety of the submarine. Use of an unqualified vendor in the manufacture of these molded Hydrophone Stave Assemblies materials could result in premature failure or breakdown of the material, which would affect the submarine’s performance and overall stealth capabilities. By utilizing improper molded Hydrophone Stave Assemblies material, it could reduce the submarine’s acoustic signature, making it more detectable by sonar systems. Ineffective material may not absorb or scatter sound waves effectively, allowing more sound to reflect off the submarine’s hull. This would increase the submarine’s detectability, making it The agency has determined that Molded Hydrophone Stave Assemblies should be designated as AMSC C, requiring engineering source approval by the design control activity in order to maintain the quality of the part. Existing unique design capability, engineering skills, and manufacturing knowledge by the qualified source(s) require acquisition of the part from the approved source(s). An alternate source must qualify in accordance with the design control activity’s procedures, as approved by the cognizant Government engineering activity. The qualification procedures must be approved by the Government engineering activity having jurisdiction over the part in the intended application Engineering source approval is provided by the In-Service Engineering Agent (ISEA) upon a vendor’s facility qualification. Contractors must be approved prior to award. Awards will not be held up pending approvals. Currently, the only qualified source is Teledyne for these items.
