Description

Developments in the field of computer vision, particularly in deep learning, are providing new
methods for detecting and classifying vulnerable road users in an effort to increase their safety
and mobility in traffic. Access to and the development of quality datasets is critical in the
successful application of computer vision as a means of improving the safety of pedestrians and
other vulnerable road users. FHWA has conducted a reference scan to identify existing open
datasets that are available for research and benchmarking and now is seeking information about
possible other image datasets that could complement and provide increased diversity for
protection of all types of vulnerable road users. FHWA also seeks to increase awareness and
interest in applying computer vision for pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.

The FHWA EAR program is seeking information about existing data and planned collection
video images of pedestrian or other vulnerable road users that could serve the research and
development community for pursuing greater safety and access for vulnerable road users.
